In my research I focus on the 1917 October Revolution in Kazan and the role Volga Muslims played in it. I am specifically interested in the Tatars' vision of Communism as Muslim, an idea attributed to Tatar Bolshevik Mirsaid Sultan-Galiev who I use as an entry figure for this discussion.
My broader interests include political and social philosophy, Marxism, anti-, de-, and post-colonial theory, the history of anticolonial struggles, empires and imperialism, nationalism, federalism, and secularization.
