Biography, Education and Training
Stefania Cotei is a PhD candidate in the History of Consciousness Department at UC Santa Cruz. Her interdisciplinary research focuses on examining the political, economic, and social influences of inter-imperial legacies in postsocialist states. She integrates critical race and ethnic studies, political philosophy, and Karen Barad’s agential realism to trouble concepts of nationalism, historical objectivity, archives, and the politics of memory. Stefania’s work pushes the boundaries of traditional historical inquiry, challenging silences within the archives and bringing forth marginalized voices, with a focus on Romani histories in Eastern Europe.
Stefania holds an MA in Sociocultural Anthropology from the University of Bern (2022), and a BA in International Affairs from The George Washington University (2016). She is also the co-creator of Autocorrect, a Romanian language podcast that engages artists, scholars, and writers into open dialogue about intersecting power dynamics in Romania.
